Human Factors Meets Sustainability
CEL is embarking on a new research program to study the application of human factors engineering to the design of sustainability aides and systems for the home and workplace. Our aim is to support sustainable behaviour by creating an effective feedback control system around resource consumption. Antony Hilliard and Scott A.C. Flemming are working with Professor Greg A. Jamieson to determine the scope and direction of this new research program. They expressed some of their initial ideas in a poster entitled “Considering Human Factors Perspectives on Sustainable Energy Systems” presented at the Conference on Industrial Ecology in June 2007. The poster was very well received, winning first prize in the student poster competition The abstract and pdf version of the poster (designed by CEL undergraduate student Liuba Mamonova) are posted below as well as on the International Society for Industrial Ecology (ISIE) student website. Currently the research team is working with University of Toronto’s Sustainability Office and others to identify projects, sponsors and additional collaborators.
