Themes
The following six themes are relevant to CEL's vision statement.
Virtually all of the research projects with which CEL has been involved
contribute to one or more of these themes.

- Theoretical
- Develop a theoretical basis for systematically analysing,
designing, and evaluating adaptation in sociotechnical systems.
- Empirical
- Conduct empirical research using a diverse range of methodologies
to test and inform theory.
- Generalizability
- Assess the transfer of theoretical implications and empirical
findings from all other themes to novel applications in diverse
sectors of society.
- Design Process
- Study the process of designing sociotechnical systems to ensure the practical relevance of our work.
- Cross-Disciplinary
- Draw from and contribute to related scholarly disciplines
to advance the development of unified knowledge.
- Meta-scientific
- Investigate and better understand the scientific process
to learn how to increase the impact of our work.
